About Make an Image Background Transparent
Picks a colour - by default the one in the top-left corner, which is the background on most graphics - and makes every pixel close to it fully transparent. Raise the tolerance to catch a background that is not perfectly uniform.
Soften edges makes the transition partial rather than all-or-nothing: pixels near the edge of the tolerance become semi-transparent instead of vanishing, which removes the jagged fringe you otherwise get around anti-aliased text and curves.
This works on flat backgrounds. For a photograph, where the subject has to be separated from a busy scene, the Background Remover uses a segmentation model instead and will do a far better job.
