About Change Image Opacity
Lowering the opacity scales the alpha channel of every pixel, so the image becomes see-through wherever it was solid. The result must be saved as PNG or WebP - JPEG has no alpha channel at all and would flatten the transparency onto a solid background.
Watermarks are the usual reason: an overlay at 20% opacity reads as a mark rather than as part of the picture. A linear fade is also available, which ramps the alpha across the image instead of applying one value everywhere.
