UTF-8 Phoenician

The Phoenician script was one of the world's earliest alphabets, developed around 1050 BCE by the seafaring Phoenician civilization in the eastern Mediterranean. It is a consonantal alphabet (abjad) consisting of 22 letters, written from right to left, with symbols representing only consonant - vowels were left to be inferred from context.

It was used in the region then known as Canaan or Put. It is a Semitic language, related to Hebrew and and Arabic.

The Phoenician alphabet is especially important because it became the foundation for many later writing systems. The Greek alphabet was adapted from it, which in turn influenced the Latin alphabet (used in English and many modern languages).
